Teaching
A dedicated teacher as well as performer, Dr. McClung has taught classes and private students at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. For three years, he was the director of the education ensemble of the percussion section of the Honolulu Symphony, which performs for public school students throughout the state. As a Brown Scholar, Dr. McClung was the founder and first teacher of the Mini-Maestros program, a music-and-movement class for young people given through the Shepherd School of Music's preparatory program at Rice University.
As a private instructor, Dr. McClung has rapidly developed a studio of highly motivated students at three of the leading high schools in the Houston area. His students recently dominated the top rankings in the highly competitive Region, Area and Texas All-State Band auditions, occupying 8 of the top 10 positions at Region and 5 of the top 10 at Area. Some of his students were recently featured in a percussion ensemble performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
Dr. McClung also serves as a mentor at the Hot Springs Music Festival, where he gives private instruction, leads master classes, and coaches and performs with the percussion section of the festival orchestra. His students have come from internationally-renowned
music schools like Eastman, Oberlin, the University of Michigan, Rice University, UT Austin, DePaul, and the University of Maryland.
